Facebook – A for-profit corporation and online social media and social networking service was launched on February 4, 2004, by Mark Zuckerberg, along with fellow Harvard College students and roommates, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes. Initially, Facebook was simply limited the membership to Harvard students; however, later the founders expanded it to higher education institutions in the Boston area. Facebook gradually added support for students at various other universities, and eventually to high school students as well.
Facebook has grown to be one of the largest and most used social media networks used today by consumers of all ages. A platform that was once created to simply become a means for college students to stay connected today has grown far beyond its potential. In fact, this social media conglomerate that not only connects families, friends and old classmates to each other; but it also has transformed into a way for brands to connect one on one with their consumers.
Though there are many tools that aid companies in this effort it is their newest feature that has tremendous changed the way how brands tell their stories and connect to their audience. This new feature is called Facebook Live.
What is Facebook Like?
Facebook describes this new feature as live videos that are in real-time video posts on Facebook. Live videos from public figures you follow and your friends appear in your News Feed. When you’re watching a live video or a video that was live, you can tap or click Subscribe to get notified the next time that Facebook account starts a live broadcast.
What does this mean for marketers?
We now have the ability to connect a brand spokesperson directly to the consumer. We have done the research, interviews and contract negotiations and we have selected the spokesperson that our consumers like. We have them featured on a few traditional advertisement pieces and then we are done. What if I suggested to you that Facebook Live presents a whole new way where your spokesperson can speak to your audiences. Even better what if I told you that Facebook is a better way to enhance the conversation between companies and their consumers.
An Opportunity to Tell Your Authentic Story
Today’s consumers crave authenticity and what as brands we struggle with figuring out how authentic do we become with out giving away all of our secrets to the competition. The value in having real people advocate for brands by inspiring, informing and entertaining audiences across social, content and video is real. Serving up the content your audience wants on their terms and in their language from people they trust works well.
Facebook has given the world yet another gift in staying connected. As marketers they have given us another outlet to connect with our consumers in a totally new way. As marketers it is our job to find out how to make this new feature work to allow us to tell the stories that our consumers need to hear about us.
